I'm reading Transformation in preparation to submit it, and this is one of my favorite parts in the whole book:
"Chains," Connor whispered, and tried to raise his arms. "Can't." It still hurt to talk; in fact, every word felt as if he had swallowed acid, which, he supposed, he had.
The dog--was this Jeremy?--padded over to the wall, studied the chains for a moment, then took the iron ring in its mouth.
"Haha," Connor croaked, distantly annoyed that the dog would think he could pull an iron ring from the wall.
A moment later, the iron ring clanked to the ground, and the chains followed it. The dog who was probably Jeremy turned to glance at him, and Connor saw a distinct glint of something intelligent in its gaze.
"Caught you too," he pointed out, and the dog smiled again, as if to remind him that Connor was in the same predicament.
